BROOMSTICK PRETENDING TO BE A ROUND BAR OF WOOD BY ANDRÉ CADERE OR STOLEN OBJECT RETURNED AS A STORY

The original idea for this work consisted of making a replica of one of the wooden bars by André Cadere and correcting the manipulation of the mathematical sequence implicit in all of them. However, the process of replication itself entails the assimilation of the error. Thus it is no longer understood as an alteration but as part of the model. A faithful copy will incorporate any irregularity, absorbing it.

To produce it, and moved by the enthusiasm that the eloquence of the previous reasoning aroused in me, I stole a broomstick from the exhibition space. I restored it and cut it into cylindrical pieces which should be painted and arranged like the original work. But, during the process of making the replica –once the initial rapture had vanished– the idea didn’t look interesting anymore. However, since I had used a material that didn’t belong to me, I felt responsibile of having to keep the piece going in order to justify my theft.

Despite all that –and in a quite tautological way– I was really interested in the idea of having to resolve a work to free myself from the guilt that the stolen material made me feel. Kind behavior as creative engine. Thus this way of reasoning becomes a part of the work’s conceptual logic. The formal solution of the piece coincides exactly with the initial project but a new narrative element has been added. This element works like a rumour about all the above and is supported by the fact that the work will be abandoned in the exhibition space in order to return it to the public use. A gesture that agrees with Cadere and incites hypertextual complexity.

CONTINUOUS DECISION MAKING PROCESS OR TENNIS MATCH (WITH SEVEN SECRET MANIPULATIONS)

This work is a tennis match recorded from TV.

Besides working as a ready made that compares the video itself with the art practice understood as a process of decision making, the original recording has sufferred seven manipulations.
These are almost not noticeable and anyway kept in secret so they move the attention of the viewer to all these other things –whatever they could be– that may not be part of the original video.

However, and given the real improbability for the manipulations to be discovered, seting thus the faith of the audience as the only way to aproach the work, the video can be watched as a normal tennis match as well.

THE DOG IN THE CORNER OF THE PAINTING

I had the possibility to do an intervention in a small theatre in Barcelona. I thought it would be a good opportunity to do a lecture, explaining the true story about how I did two of my latest pieces: To work or Horse describing a circle and Hair and pubic hair united by the means of a Hunter knot.

SUNBURN (CONSIDERATIONS ON THE POSSIBILITY OF ELUDE CERTAIN RESPONSIBILITIES)

During the sumer of 2009 I was thinking about the concept of responsibility and how it affected me specifically as artist. In this holiday period, I saw some tourists on the beach who did not use any solar protection. Their skin became very red when sunbathing. This attitude was an expression of obvious irresponsible behaviour and the sunburns were a reliable register of the supposed foolishness of doing nothing. It was an eloquent approach to that theme, but I was on holiday so I did not keep working on it. On my return, a friend of mine, who I had told about this preoccupation, sent me an e-mail with a picture taken by him. The image showed a girl in an airport waiting room with extremely sunburned legs. Somehow, here I was the passive one so if I used his image to do my piece, alluding to the parallelism between the theme and the process, I had solved the work.

TRYING TO TWIST BOTH BREASTS OVER THEMSELVES IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS

This is an opportunistic piece.
I titled my first individual exhibition Constantly moving whilst standing still. So having the chance to show my work on my own for the first time, I also had the chance to repeat a previous work titled Trying to twist a tit over itself. This remake does a little wink to the pice by Jonathan Monk which title I copied for my own show.

TO INSIST OR A FRIENDS DOG MASTURBATING AGAINST A LEG

At a friend’s party, his dog started masturbating against guests’ legs. I recorded the situation on my phone. This work consists of transferring this video to an analogical 16mm film in order to create a false fiction and turn it into a kind of a happy metaphor about the hedonistic persistence in an equivocal.

TO BLOW OR TO SIMPLIFY THE BIRTH OF VENUS BY BOTTICELLI

During my residence in l’Estruch (Art development center in Sabadell) I had the chance of having my own atellier for a period of time. Given my interest in the use of the space, I intended to make, in situ, a simple re-enactment of The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli.

There is a boy hung from the ceiling continuously blowing at a redheaded girl’s hair. To the right of the scene, a third character is holding a bathrobe in an apathetic way, apparently waiting for the action to end. However, the action is redundantly repeated in loop.

TRYING TO TWIST A TIT OVER ITSELF

During a video chat conversation I asked a girl to try to twist one of her breasts over itself. I saw certain ambiguity between trying to do cyber sex thinking in art and to be doing art but preferring to do cyber sex.

TO WORK OR HORSE DESCRIBING A CIRCLE

Before moving to Barcelona to study Fine Art, I practiced horse riding for ten years. I had my own horse and therefore had the responsibility of taking care of him. Generally, these horses live inside stables, so I had to try and take him out daily. However, days when I didn’t feel like riding, I took the horse out to longe. This consists in holding the horse tied to a long rope letting him run in circles.

A horse galloping in circles. The video, done from the center of the circumference, is presented in loop. The effort of the horse is invested in a circular movement.

I’m not sure, but I think that this has something to do with art.
